Special kids need special parenting. How we respond really does matter!
Therapeutic Responses to Common Behaviors
That help calm the chaos and diffuse the drama!
Parenting hurt kids is hard!
Consequences and punishment don’t work. Rewards don’t work. The methods we were raised with or even that we successfully used with our other kids most likely won’t work either. In fact, all of these things will likely only increase tension and make things worse for our struggling kids.
Our special kids need specialized, or more appropriately, therapeutic parenting designed to help reduce their automatic fear responses, promote attachment and healing, and help rewire neural pathways in their brains that were damaged by trauma exposure.
What is therapeutic parenting?
That’s it. That’s all.
It isn’t complicated a list of rules or strategies of what to do or not do. It isn’t any one particular strategy or method. Nor is it coddling kids or turning a blind eye to poor behavior and allowing them to do whatever they want. Real therapeutic parenting is a balanced approach that involves a lot of love, grace, patience, understanding, and guidance combined with very strong boundaries that keep everyone both physically and emotionally safe.
The responses outlined in this document offer suggestions on how to appropriately and therapeutically respond to extraordinarily challenging behaviors in a way that will help to calm the situation instead of escalate it. Request your copy right away!

Meet your coach!
Hi! I’m Diana. I’m a wife, a mom to 3 awesome (but challenging) kids, and I’m a certified parent and family coach. Two of my children came to me through adoption and struggle with all sorts of issues including FASD, RAD, ADHD, PTSD, mood disorders, learning disabilities, and a whole lot more. Sometimes they’re my greatest challenge and always my greatest gifts. Though we’re far from perfect and we still have our less than stellar days, we are healing and we are happy. Our family is living proof that it can and does happen!
I’d love to help you find your way out, too! I have a passion for helping hurting, exhausted moms families find their way out of darkness and chaos and enjoy a greater sense of connection, peace, and harmony in their lives and in their homes. Learn more at serenitylinkscoaching.com
